Fort Pickens National Park
Fort Pickens on the Florida Panhandle is the largest of four†forts†(Fort Barrancas,†Fort McRee†and the Navy Yard)†built to defend Pensacola Bay and its navy yard; the fort was begun in 1829, completed in 1834.†Located at the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, just offshore from the mainland, Pickens guarded the island and the entrance to the harbor.†Visitors can take a self-guided tour of this authentic fort active during the Civil War and later used as a jail to hold the infamous American Indian chief Geronimo.
Fort Pickens is located in the Gulf Islands National Seashore and the beautiful white-sand beaches the area is popular for.
